VALUE CHAIN OPERATION
For sourcing Certified Organic Crops, Vantage works with smallholders in India and a couple of African countries. A brief description of our agricultural projects is presented here:
India
In India, we started developing our own organic farming projects with smallholder farmers from the year 2012. Initial visits were undertaken in the Baran district of Rajasthan and Guna in MP and a local NGO was partnered with to reach out to farmers. Together with the NGO staff, various farmers’ meetings were conducted in the villages to convince and induct farmers in our Grower Group Certification Scheme for Organic Farming.
But the partnership with this NGO didn’t last long as they were not able to keep up with the pace and quality required in the work. Therefore, we ventured into developing our own team of farm extension workers and started registering farmers. With this, we started our first organic production audit journey for the Kharif 2013 crop. In this first audit, 2383 farmers with a total of about 4000 Hectares were taken under certification in six groups registered on the APEDA portal with our office located in Guna city. Expansion and registering of new farmers continued after the audit in and around the Guna area in MP with a total number of 20,000 farmers in 40 groups with over 26,500 Hectares of land in the next three years. The key harvesting focus in the Guna project was soybeans with some other crops such as maize, wheat, mustard & rapeseed, urad, paddy, coriander, Bengal gram, lentil, etc.
In the year 2013, we started another project in the Barmer district, Rajasthan and in two years we registered about 50,000 farmers in 200 groups with about 1,50,000 Hectares of land. The major crops here included cumin, Psyllium, castor, wheat, gram, moong, moth, pearl millet, rapeseed, guar, etc. We also have a cattle population of 100,000 producing over 5,00,000 liters of organic milk per day with our farmers.
Tanzania
We started exploring organic farming projects and building our brand name outside of India in early 2014. Initially in Tanzania, we wanted to explore organic business opportunities to give our company a new dimension and African farmers a new opportunity. Later on, we were interested in organic sunflower, maize, sorghum, groundnut, and pigeon cultivation as well. We labored from the Southern Highlands to Dodoma, Tanzania’s capital.
We were involved in a number of projects aimed at increasing farmer capacity and educating them about good agricultural practices.
With a lot of hard work and effort, Vantage was able to expand its wings, and by the year 2019, we had over 20,000 farmers and 47,000 hectares of organic land.
Nigeria
After initiating the project in Tanzania, we went to Nigeria in May 2015 and started our project in Nigeria as well in partnership with the local team of an international volunteer-based organization. In February 2016, we got our certificate for about 2700 farmers with 8500 hectares of land yielding crops like soybeans, maize, cashew, and yam. We kept expanding our project and included about 19,000 farmers with about 48,000 hectares of land spread all over Nigeria from Lagos in South West up to Kaduna in the North Central part to Benue in South East. Nigeria has the potential to cultivate soybeans, maize, cassava, yam, cashew, sesame, moringa, and many other crops.
Benin
In the year 2016, together with the network of our Nigerian partners, we initiated projects in the neighboring country Benin Republic too. In December 2016, we got our first batch of an estimated 1300 farmers with 2000 hectares of certified land. We kept on increasing the farmers’ base and in 2019 we have about 5200 farmers with over 12,000 hectares of land certified for organic farming. The major crops in Benin are Soybeans, cashew, palm, sesame, etc. The project has now expanded from the capital Cotonou in South upto Natitingou in North.
