If you think organic farming is expensive, have you priced cancer lately.
: Joel Salatin
As per the definition of IFOAM ecosystems biodiversity “Organic agriculture is a production system that sustains the health of soils, and people. It relies on ecological processes, and cycles adapted to local conditions, rather than the use of inputs with adverse effects. Organic agriculture combines tradition, innovation and science to benefit the shared environment and promote fair relationships and a good quality of life for all involved.
FOUR PRINCIPLES OF ORGANIC AGRICULTURE
- The principle of health.
- The principle of ecology.
- The principle of fairness.
- The principle of care.
ORGANIC FARMING is not just a way to sustain environmental health but also a lifestyle to be proud of. Over the years, it has showed us that even few kilograms of earthworms or a cow has the capacity to provide for a whole farmer’s family. Data shared by the government recently indicates that the consumption of chemical fertilizers has increased by around 16% between 2015-16 & 2020-21.
Some Interesting Facts:
*BIHAR consumed the highest amount of chemical fertilizers per hectare(245.25 kg).
*Punjab, Haryana, and Telangana are among the top five states/UTs which have all reported consumption of more than 200 kg/ha in 2019-20.
In India consumption of chemical pesticides has also shown a quick rise in the recent years.
Between 2015-16 and 2019-20, there has been a growth of 8.78% in the overall consumption of pesticides in INDIA
*Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh are the major consumers of chemical pesticides in the country over the last five years.
*Punjab had the third-highest consumption with an average of 5,592 MT consumed every year.
CONCERNING EFFECTS OF CHEMICAL FERTILIZERS, CHEMICAL PESTICIDES AND CHEMICAL HERBICIDES;
According to the Pesticide Action Network, male farmers are more prone to prostate cancer and female farmers to ovarian and skin cancer.
*More than 159 species of birds has extinct already and many in possible to extinct zone.
* Increase in desertification in high intensive agri chemical inputs areas.
* Dung beetles, whose actions in soils not only protect against pathogens, but also unlock critical nutrients, are in decline.
* Kidney, Lever and Brain impairment in newborns because of pesticides residues in milk of mother.
AND THE LIST IS ENDLESS.
NOW THE QUESTION IS ” WHAT KIND OF FUTURE WE WANT.”
THE ANSWER IS
THE FUTURE WHICH HOLDS ALL OF US ACCOUNTABLE FOR
Eradicating POVERTY and changing unsustainable and promoting sustainable patterns of consumption and production and protecting and managing the natural resource base of economic and social development.
And that’s where ORGANIC AGRICULTURE becomes our OXYGEN.
INDIA has been traditionally organic and its farmers have traditional wisdom on best practices to put while performing organic farming. The modern organic farming started when we STARTED GETTING CANCER HARVEST FROM GREEN REVOLUTION
Brian Brett once said
“Farming is a profession of hope.”
At last , WHAT WE WANT TO PURSUE is a bigger question to ask
*AN ENDLESS HOPES with ORGANICS.
OR
*A HOPELESS END with unhealthy chemicals.
And ORGANIC FARMING is a profession of ENDLESS HOPES.
